HARTLEPOOL boxing's bid for Junior ABA Championship glory has taken a blow with the withdrawal of Steve Smith from the competition.

The Gus Robinson Developments ABC teenager was due to face old rival Adam Szekeres in the Tyne, Tees and Wear final at Peterlee Leisure Centre tonight.

But illness has forced Smith to withdraw.

The 17-year-old would have started as favourite having beaten the Phil Thomas School of Boxing fighter on the Middlesbrough club's home show in March.

While the loss of Smith is a set-back, it is not all doom and gloom.
Gus Robinson Developments ABC team-mates Paul Archer and Peter Cope are already through to the quarter-finals, which will be staged at Newbiggin on Sunday, May 18.

And they could be joined by more Hartlepool and district boxers, with Headland's Steve Hart and South Durham ABC'S Mohammed Wagas and Jeff Saunders all involved in TTW finals this evening at the St Cuthbert's Way venue.

Potential fight of the night – and possibly the season – will see Horden Sportsman's Anth Hardy clash with the mini-Ricky Hatton, Callum Winton (Catholic Club) in the class four 60 kilo final.
