PEOPLE are being urged to brave arctic waters safe in the knowledge they are raising money for charity this Valentine’s Day.

As well as spending the day treating a loved one, people can also support pensioners in the town.

Warrior Park Care Home, in Warrior Drive, Hartlepool, has organised its second annual Valentine’s Day dip.

Staff are encouraging people to make the trip to Seaton Carew, plunge into the freezing North Sea and help to raise hundreds of pounds.

The money raised through sponsorship will be split between the residents fund at the home and British Heart Foundation.

Laura Tomkins, personal activities leader at the care home, braved the icy waters last year and will do the same this month.

Laura said: “All I remember from last year is how cold it was, it really was freezing.

“But it’s good fun, it raised hundreds of pounds and we are hoping it will do the same this year.”

Laura will be joined by her colleagues Liam Wood, Jan Teasdale, Lulu Kitching and Marie Boagey, and hopefully dozens more town residents on the day.

“People can come and pick sponsorship forms up on the day or beforehand,” added Laura.

“Last year was very popular and hopefully this year will be even better.”

Last year’s dip raised just short of £300, a total the staff are hoping they will eclipse this year.

Laura added: “If we could reach £500 that would be fantastic.

“The dip is raising money for two worthy causes.

“The British Heart Foundation is a cause close to a lot of people’s hearts and the residents fund at the home is obviously very important to us.

“That money is spent on trips for the residents or entertainment in the home.

“It gives our residents something to look forward to.”

For more information about the dip or to register call the care home on (01429) 234705.
