PRIMARY school children spent the afternoon questioning a council leader who spoke about his duties and civic life.

The chairman of Hartlepool Borough Council Stephen Akers-Belcher wants to make youngsters aware of his and other council roles and has wrote to every primary school in the town.

Staff and pupils at Throston Primary School, in Flint Walk, were delighted to welcome Coun Akers-Belcher and the children took the opportunity to ask some testing questions.

They also found out all about the chairman’s Chair Bear charity work as he continues to raise thousands of pounds for seven youth groups across Hartlepool.

“I remember when I was at school and the mayor used to go round all of the schools and I was keen to bring that back and let the children know more about civic life in Hartlepool,” said Coun Akers-Belcher.

“It was a thoroughly enjoyable visit to Throston, the children all seemed extremely interested and asked some fantastic questions.

“It was a really nice afternoon.”

Youngsters also supported Coun Akers-Belcher’s charity appeal by buying pin badges which were sold by head boy, Lewis Stoddart, and head girl, Victoria Lynn.

Julie Moor, partnerships co-ordinator at the school, said: “During our normal celebration assembly, we had a special visit from Councillor Akers-Belcher.

“Children listened to him talk about the charities and projects he supports through his Chair Bear charity work.

“He also explained what his duties are and the significance of the chains of office he wears.

“It was an excellent afternoon and the children all seemed to really enjoy it.”
