ONE of the youngsters in this 40-year-old photograph has come forward and revealed the identities of most of the childhood friends posing with him.

Les Burton contacted Together Again after seeing a picture of his 12-year-old self peaking out at him from an edition of the column from last month.

Les, who is now a 52-year-old offshore worker and father-of-two, answered an appeal by Janice Kelly (nee Magee), who is the little girl sitting on the front of the fire engine wearing a strappy dress.

The picture was taken on Rovers Day in 1972, which was an annual fun day held at Hartlepool Rovers Rugby Club, in West View Road.

Janice had managed to identify Les and two of his brothers, Peter and Les, as the families lived next door to each other in Purves Place.

But Les has come forward to shed more light on the details of the youngsters.

Les, who now lives in the Clavering area of town, said he is the older boy to the left of the picture, with his arm outstretched.

On his knee is his little brother Peter and to his right is brother Alan.

Another brother, Robert, is at the top of the picture, standing on the left of the ladder, with local DJ George Stuart and Barry Ainsley to George’s right.

He said Micky Hanley is sitting next to him and his brothers and Ann Foster is on the middle row on the right, with brown hair and wearing a white cardigan.

Les said: “Everybody used to look forward to Rovers Day.

“It was a great day.

“There wasn’t much money kicking about in those days but the kids loved Rovers Day.

Anyone who can help identify the remaining children can call Tracy Walker on (01429) 239374.
