Role with police for surveyor
A FAMILY man who helped strengthen links between ethnic communities and police has been named the vice-chairman of a police authority.
Aslam Hanif, a property surveyor, has served as an independent member of the Cleveland Police Authority (CPA) since 2006.
He has now been named its vice-chairman after Hartlepool Mayor Stuart Drummond recently moved up from the position to become chairman.
Both are expected to carry out the roles until November, when an elected Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) and a Police Crime Panel (PCP) will replace the authority.
Mr Hanif, who also chairs the authority’s police and resources panel, said: “I have enjoyed working to improve the relationships between the police and what are sometimes seen as hard-to-reach groups and I am pleased to take on this new role at such an important time for policing, and, I believe, become the first person from the black and minority ethnic (BME) communities to hold the post of vice-chair.
“We face major challenges over coming months, both financially and in preparing for the transition to elected police commissioners, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to protect the quality of our policing.”
Mr Hanif, from Stockton, is also an active member of the Association of Police Authorities BME Networking Group.
