Tall Ships police planner praised
High Sheriff of North Yorkshire Alexandra Holford presents Chief Inspector Michael Williams with his commendation
A CHIEF inspector who organised the policing of The Tall Ships Races event has been commended for his work.
Chief Inspector Michael Williams spent two years planning and delivering the policing side of the Hartlepool festival that saw almost a million people visit the town.
The international maritime event in August 2010 passed without major incident and was hailed a success by Cleveland Police.
Chf Insp Williams has now been given an Assistant Chief Constable Commendation for his work.
His commendation states: “Over a two-year period, Chief Inspector Michael Williams was involved in planning and delivering the event. Over this time he demonstrated great determination, skill and personal leadership, working with partners to deliver what was ultimately a hugely successful event.
“His efforts reflected well not only on Cleveland Police, but also on our partners, as well as helping to provide an extremely positive image of Hartlepool and the Cleveland area.”
Chf Insp Williams’ planning for the event included dealing with traffic issues, preventing crime, monitoring crowds and creating emergency contingency plans.
He said: “All of this planning was only made possible by the support and commitment across the force.
“I’ve really enjoyed working with the uniformed events planning team who have demonstrated in a short space of time their ability to plan and develop an event of this scale in a highly professional manner.
“No amount of planning can deliver such an excellent event without the commitment and engagement of all involved in the delivery during the event.”
“I give my sincere thanks to everyone involved and was proud to work alongside them in the delivery of the highly successful Tall Ships event 2010.”
