Crime down in Burn Valley

Councillor Jonathan Brash

A WARD councillor has praised efforts to slash crime in the Burn Valley area.

Latest figures show that in December last year, crime fell by 35 per cent compared to the previous month.

Speaking at a recent meeting of Burn Valley North Residents’ Association, PCSO Jon Formstone said there were just 27 reported crimes in December compared to 43 in November across the whole of Burn Valley.

Labour councillor Jonathan Brash said the figures are yet more good news for Burn Valley, which last year saw a big drop in crime in both the Cornwall Street and Elwick Road areas.

As reported in October, the Cornwall Street area saw an overall reduction of 26 per cent in incidents of crime, including domestic burglary, criminal damage, drug dealing and supply and an overall reduction of 40-per-cent in anti-social behaviour, resulting in 135 fewer incidents.

Meanwhile, the Elwick Road area had 23 fewer crimes, which is an 82 per cent reduction and 23 fewer incidents of anti-social behaviour, a fall of 38 per cent over the previous six months.

Over the past year Hartlepool Borough Council’s neighbourhood management team and housing services, neighbourhood police, victim support, and the anti-social behaviour unit have been coming together as a Joint Action Group (JAG) in a bid to tackle these problems.

Coun Brash, who said the signs are positive, added: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in reducing crime in Burn Valley.

“Their hard work means that more and more it is the criminals who live in fear, not law-abiding residents.

“PCs Karen McManus and Mick McArdle along with PCSOs Jon Formstone and Andy Bell do a fantastic job patrolling our streets and as part of a much bigger team really make a difference in keeping our community safe.

“In Burn Valley we have a strong community spirit and working in conjunction with local groups and residents is the only way to maintain this improvement and that is what we will continue to do.

“There can be no let up in our efforts to stamp out these problems as one crime is one too many.

“I would encourage any resident who wants to report crime or anti-social behaviour to do so straight away using one of these numbers.

“Every piece of information is another blow against the thugs who prey on decent people and of course you can always contact your local councillors.

“We are always here to help.”
