Hair-raising cash

A PETERLEE man who made a “daft bet” has not shaved or cut his hair for almost a year – and raised £700 in the process.

Jack Ward, 23, from Dene Close, in Peterlee, decided not go to the hairdressers for a year after friends said he would not be able to last without a trim.

Jack took up the challenge on New Year’s Day and decided to try to raise money for Cancer Research and Blackhall Cricket Club’s junior section.

The former York University student said: “Everyone was saying that I would go and get it cut so I said I wouldn’t.

“It got to the point where I was just mentioning it to people and they would donate some money and it is a massive help.

“Hopefully the money will keep coming in, because both organisations need as much help as they can get.”

Jobless Jack, who is first team captain at Blackhall Cricket Club, hopes to reach £1,000 by his New Year’s Day deadline.

He will then shave off his beard and have his hair cut when he gives the money to the charity in January.

He said: “I want to thank everyone who has donated and it is an amazing effort by everyone.

“I know that both the organisations will benefit because I will split the cash straight down the middle.

“The cricket club will be able to buy new equipment to make things better there.”

Jack hopes for one last push to raise money before New Year’s Day.
