Mayor helps job dream

A MAYOR’S rallying call for businesses to help boost the local economy has resulted in a job for one teenager.
Jake Hebb, 17, from the Clavering area of Hartlepool was considering ending his apprenticeship in vehicle mechanics because he couldn’t get a placement with a local firm.
Town Mayor Stuart Drummond recently wrote to Hartlepool companies pointing out that if most businesses could take on one extra person, it would almost solve the town’s unemployment problems.
One of the first firms to respond was the MOT and Clutch Centre, a family-run business which has recently re-located to new premises in Brenda Road.
Jill Clyburn, from the company, said: “My own son Neil, who is 21, already works for the company so I know only too well how important it is for young people to be given an opportunity.
“The town and indeed the country desperately needs more tradesmen and women so this is a great opportunity for him. I’ve given Jake the chance and it’s now down to him to take it.”
Jake said: “I’m thrilled to bits to be given this opportunity and it now means I can complete my apprenticeship. I was becoming frustrated previously and thinking of throwing the towel in.
“I’ll certainly be putting 100 per cent into my work and I want to do my utmost to do all I can to take the business forward.”
Mayor Drummond also asked firms to complete a survey form to help identify ways in which the council and companies can work together for the benefit of the town.
He said: “This is a classic example where a local company and the council have worked together to create a job opportunity.
“I’m delighted for Jake. He’s a confident young man and I’m sure he’ll grab this opportunity with both hands.
“Our economic development team are very busy sifting through the responses from local firms and I’m really pleased with the response.”
