New street league set to start

AN innovative programme that helps young people get on the jobs ladder using a mix of sport and education is set to re-launch.
Street League is a national charity which aims to help 16 to 25-year-old men and women into employment, education and training.
It works with those who are not in employment, education and training (NEET), including young offenders and substance misusers and the young people take part in a range of activities to build their employability.
The Street League academy sessions are held at Belle Vue Community Sports and Youth Centre, in Kendal Road, and will relaunch a week today, Monday February 4, for eight weeks.
Organisers engage them in a structured football and education academy programme, with two hours in the classroom and two hours on the pitch each day.
The aim of the intensive eight-week programme is to develop vital employability skills such as communication, teamwork and goal-setting and it also offers nationally-recognised qualifications.
Those on the programme will also be able to take advantage of CV writing sessions, career support and mock interviews.
Dean Cartwright, progressions co-ordinator in Hartlepool, said: “Street League is the national charity which changes lives through football.
“We work with unemployed 16 to 25-year-olds to develop crucial life and employability skills.
“Street League delivers an eight-week football and education academy programme and this develops key skills such as communication, teamwork and goal-setting, and includes CV-writing and mock interview sessions.
“Some 76 per cent of academy graduates get a job or move into training.”
The academy sessions at the Belle Vue Centre are open to men and women from all backgrounds and can cater for between 16 and 20 young people.
Street League was originally founded as an organisation working with homeless people.
Since then it has engaged with more than 20,000 of the hardest-to-reach young adults, and evolved into one of the fastest-growing charities in the UK.
Street League’s official ambassador is Manchester United striker Robin van Persie.
