Horror but no surprise

AS AN international greyhound protection organisation, we were horrified to read of the discovery of the mutilated body of a greyhound by the side of a country lane, headlined "Dead greyhound horror discovery" (Mail, March 16).

Horrified, but very sadly not surprised because our research indicates that over 15,000 greyhounds, bred for the British racing industry, are put to death every year after being judged unsuitable for racing or after their "careers" on the tracks come to an end.

All too often, in order to save money or for expediency, these dogs are not put to sleep by a vet but killed by far crueler methods, as appears to be the case with this poor creature.

In order to put an end to this horrific situation, we are appealing to members of the public not to attend or bet on greyhound races so that this industry fades away through lack of financial support.

See our website at www.greyhoundaction.org.uk for more information.
