A PROJECT which aims to keep bored youngsters from hanging around street corners has been given a £130 boost.
The Targeted Outreach Project is run by staff at the Belle Vue Sports Community and Youth Centre, in Hartlepool’s Kendal Road, and works with hundreds of children a year.
Staff work with young people and provide activity sessions at the centre and also out in the community.
Now the project, which is funded by the Safer Hartlepool Partnership, has been given the funding boost thanks to members of an adult education group that are based at the same centre.
The group made a range of Christmas crafts to sell as part of a qualification and the money they raised has been donated to the Outreach Project which works with youngsters aged 11 to 18. The money will be used to buy a new sewing machine for a textiles project.
Nicola Evans, project co-ordinator, said: “Members of the adult education group made a lot of Christmas crafts and then sold them at the centre and the money they raised was donated to the project.
“I am really pleased with the donation and it is nice that our particular group has been recognised.
“The young people are thrilled.”
The project has seven staff members that walk the streets four nights a week, including Friday night, and talk to young people to see what activities they want to be put on and to also provide help and support.
Activities include table tennis, football and the textile project.
