ANDY Monkhouse today insisted Hartlepool United's out-of-contract players will keep their eyes focused on ending the season on a high.
Former Swindon winger Monkhouse is one of several members of the Pools squad whose current deals expire in the summer, although there is an option to extend the 27-year-old's contract.

The club's retained list is expected to be released in the middle of next week and should make interesting reading.

But Monkhouse said those players affected will only have one thought on their mind at the Bescot Stadium tomorrow – three points.

He said: "None of the lads really know what is happening but I am sure we will be told sometime after the last game of the season.

"Everyone has been like this in their career, but you have just got to put it to the back of your mind and hopefully do well.

"I have always got faith in my ability and there's no point in thinking about it. It is difficult but when you are out of contract it keeps you on your toes.

"There are a few of the boys in the same situation, but you have just got to deal with it.

"We have got one game left and I know for certain that we don't want to lose or draw."

Last season's fellow promoted club Walsall have enjoyed a decent play-off push this season and Monkhouse admitted it had been frustrating to watch their progress while Pools have never really hit the heights that the opening weeks promised.

Monkhouse said: "We don't want to finish the season with a couple of losses and it is a winnable game for us.

"It is a little bit frustrating that Walsall have done better than us. I don't know why that is, probably because they have been a bit more consistent than we have.

"If you are consistent in this league you seem to do well and we have not been which is why we are where we are.

"That's something we will have to improve a lot if we are going to do better next season.

"They have probably got the same budget as us, so if you look at it that way it is disappointing."
