CHRIS Turner today insisted the only result Hartlepool United must get right is the opening League One match at Rochdale.
The director of sport saw his side ruthlessly taken apart by Leeds United on Saturday – the Championship new boys winning 5-0 at Victoria Park.

It made for painful viewing but Turner believes the only scoreline which matters will be the one at Spotland on August 7.

"I've lost many (in pre-season] and I've won many," he said.

"All that matters is what happens at Rochdale.

"Look at last season – we went to MK Dons on the first day and got a good draw and then won at Coventry on the Tuesday night.

"We achieved those results having won only one friendly game.

"I don't count pre-season results – I'd sooner mistakes were made on Saturday against a quality team than in two Saturdays time at Rochdale.

"We've got plenty of time and plenty of work to put things right.

"Swindon Town lost 5-0 in the first game of last season against Gillingham and look where those two clubs ended up."
