Pools' versatility will help

ANDY Monkhouse believes the versatility in the Hartlepool United squad can be a help rather than a hindrance next season.
Pools boss Danny Wilson has received some stick this year for using players in a variety of positions.

Jamie McCunnie has been used in midfield and defence, as have Tony Sweeney, Matty Robson, Gary Liddle, Ben Clark and Ritchie Humphreys.

That has prompted a section of the Pools fans to question whether those players would benefit from a settled slot.

But Pools don't have the luxury of having a squad packed with established players and Monkhouse said everyone is happy to fill in wherever they are needed.

The 27-year-old has been used in his familiar left-wing role and in central midfield this season and said he enjoys getting a chance in either position.

Monkhouse said: "When you are on the left-wing sometimes you are not involved in the game that much.

"I just like to get on the ball and try to make things happen.

"I played there a few times in my Rotherham days but I have mainly been used on the wing at Pools.

"We have got a lot of players here and a lot of them can play in different positions.

"Wherever the gaffer puts you, you have got to do your best."

Meanwhile, Monkhouse has called on his team-mates to look themselves in the mirror over the summer months after a season of mid-table mediocrity.

The former Swindon man wants Pools to come back for pre-season prepared to win ugly – something which has been all too rare over the past nine months, particularly on the road where Wilson's side have managed just four victories.

He said: "We have all got to go away and look at ourselves and come back better for next season.

"Sometimes you would rather play badly and win and I think I would rather do that.

"There has got to be a happy medium between playing well and getting points. I don't like the place we are in the league and I am sure everyone else feels the same way."
