Ritchie needs a rest
HARTLEPOOL United captain Ritchie Humphreys admits he is looking forward to putting his feet up after tonight's Player of the Year awards.
Only Michael Nelson has played more games for Pools than Humphreys this season, who limped out of his 47th start of the campaign at Walsall on Saturday.
The Pools captain needed attention for a knee injury early in the first half and was replaced by Matty Robson with half an hour to go.
Humphreys said he couldn't wait to rest those aches and pains over the summer, but he has the small matter of tonight's awards evening first.
The 30-year-old is a contender for player of the season and will certainly be in the mix for player of the 2000s in this year's special centenary awards.
Prizes will be handed out for the best player from each decade and an overall one for the best performer from 100 years at Victoria Park.
Humphreys said: "It's a nice occasion for the fans to see the boys and for us to see everyone for the last time before they disappear here, there and everywhere.
"There will be a few faces from the past, although I don't know if any of the boys from the last seven years are going to be there.
"Someone told me the other day they were doing player of the decades. I have played a lot of games since I came here in 2001 but there are a lot of other players who have contributed to our success."
He added: "The body is a wreck again. It seems to have gone quite quick this season. It doesn't seem long ago since New Year's Day at Carlisle.
"I have played a lot of games again this season. I need to give my body a rest, especially with being a year older!"
Humphreys felt the 2-2 draw at Walsall was thoroughly deserved as Danny Wilson's side got a rare reward for a second-half fightback.
But the left-back said the game was a fair reflection of the season, with Pools dominating possession but conceding two poor goals to gift the Saddlers an early lead.
He said: "It pretty much summed up the season in that we had loads of chances, we scored two but also conceded two.
"The league table doesn't lie, if we'd had a bit better away form then possibly we would have been challenging at the right end.
"We need to be more ruthless in both areas of the pitch. Walsall summed it up. We weren't ruthless at the back, weren't ruthless up the top and we got a draw out of the game.
"We let in sloppy goals and then created chance after chance which we didn't put away.
"But to be fair the lads kept going with wave after wave of attack and they deserved their goal in the end.
"The fans deserved at least a point from the game because they were class."
