HARTLEPOOL United Danny Wilson hailed the performance of goalkeeper Arran Lee-Barrett after Saturday's 2-1 win at Peterborough.
The Pools stopper was once again in fine form at London Road to help Pools to their first away victory since March.

Lee-Barrett has looked much more assured since the start of the season and his boost in confidence is rubbing off on the back four.

Wilson said: "Arran is a terrific prospect and the criticism he has had since he has been here has been quite unfair.

"I think he has been a bit inconsistent but that's what young lads do.
"Goalkeepers are in a position where every mistake is highlighted but we have got great confidence in him.

"He lost weight when he came back for pre-season and he is growing in confidence in every game he plays.

"He was very assured on Saturday and made difficult saves look easy which is the sign of a great keeper."

Pools benefited from Peterborough's shortcomings on Saturday as the Posh missed several clear-cut first half chances and gifted Wilson's side two goals in two minutes through defensive blunders.

But Wilson was quick to praise the pressure his side put Peterborough under – highlighted in Pools' second goal when Richard Barker took advantage of defensive hesitation to score his first in the league this season.

"They had a couple of chances in the first half which they didn't take," said Wilson.

"We have been guilty of that ourselves in games already this season. If you don't take your chances the opposition have still got a bit of hope.
"I was delighted going in at 0-0 and second half we started a bit brighter.

"The first goal is always important and I am sure from Darren's (Ferguson, Peterborough manager) point of view he wouldn't have been too happy with the way they conceded.

"But we were grateful recipients that's for sure.

"When we went down to 2-1 they put us under immense pressure but we stood firm.

"We had a bit of luck at times which you always want because I don't think that has been with us too often so far, particularly on our travels.

He added: "We didn't have that many chances and a high percentage have been taken by us which is brilliant from my point of view.

"We put them under that much pressure that they made mistakes like they did.

"You have to thank Richard Barker at the end. That's the type of player he is, he never gives up and he chases lost causes and he has been rewarded.

"We have benefited from a bit of indecision between the centre back and the keeper."

One aspect which particularly pleased Wilson was that his side showed few side-effects from Tuesday night's Carling Cup victory over West Brom.

Wilson said: "We had a little bit of glory and the lads enjoyed it but we needed to dig in and they have done that.

"We just wanted three points no matter how we got them because it makes it a great week.

"It wasn't the purest game but they have come out with their rewards which is brilliant.

"We knew we had to grind out a result particularly after such a good result on Tuesday."
