'Let's have pictures of our Pools players'

CONGRATULATIONS to Hartlepool United Football Club on their centenary season, also thanks and appreciation to IOR for providing the leadership and investment under the stewardship of Ken Hodcroft. May the good times continue.
My query is this. Upon reading the story in the Mail on Saturday, May 17, headlined Shearer's delight at suite opening, there is a painting of Alan Shearer permanently displayed within the newly-opened suite. Why?

As a player his record speaks for itself, a superb player for both Newcastle and England, a stalwart for raising money for charity, an affable convivial guy who commands respect from the majority of football fans, he is adored on Tyneside.

The problem I, and I suspect a lot of Hartlepool fans have, is the omission of any Hartlepool heroes – painted or otherwise – in any prominent part of the centenary suite.

Is it asking too much to have one or more Pools players painted and put alongside Mr Shearer?

I feel this course of action is the least Mr Hodcroft could do to assuage any possible enmity from Hartlepool fans.

W K Johnson,
Landsdowne Road,
Hartlepool
