Anger and frustration over Post Offices

THERE is a lot of understandable anger and frustration about the closure of 2,500 of our branch post offices and many people don't know why it is happening.

The reason as I see it is simply that the whole Post Office network in Britain is kept going by government subsidies and the European Union is not happy about that situation.

An agreement was reached some time ago whereby in return for closing
down 2,500 post offices we would be allowed to continue to subsidise the rest of the network.

So if protests and petitions etc succeed in saving one particular post office then another will have to close instead.

It is one of the penalties that we have to pay for being in the EU along with losing our exclusive rights to fish in British waters, paying huge sums to keep the Common Agricultural Policy going and having an open border policy which allows citizens of the other 26 European members of the EU to come here to live and work.

Successive governments have taken us deeper and deeper into the EU and, according to the recently negotiated Lisbon Treaty, MPs in Westminster will soon have to give up almost all of their remaining significant responsibilities.

Having been reduced almost to the status of local councillors, many of our MPs now say their salaries should be increased up to a more appropriate level, ie £100,000 a year. Similar to what a hospital consultant earns.

They say that it would then not be necessary for them to have such generous expenses.

The mind boggles.
