COUNCILLORS and members have reacted angrily to the news (Mail, April 3) saying they have been put "over a barrel" by the bus companies and have no choice but to pay the fee – despite being far from happy with the services provided.

The council has had the people of Hartlepool over a barrel for years and we have had to pay increase after increase on the council tax despite being far from happy with the services provided.

It's the taxpayers' money that pays for these services, not the councillors.

The council could save £60,000-plus by getting rid of the mayor.
Now the council wastes more taxpayers' money by employing someone to tell us what to eat.

What a joke when it's the council that grants permission for takeaways to open on every block along York Road and Raby Road, up to the Chester Hotel, and also in Murray Street.

The local elections are next month and I hope the people of Hartlepool have the common sense to get rid of this council and vote for people with clear minds who are in touch with the modern world and won't waste the taxpayers' money on the first thing they dream up.

Must go, my takeaway is at the door, or is it the food police?

M Jackson,
Kilmarnock Road,
Hartlepool.
