ONE week today the first baby could be born in Hartlepool's new £500,000 birthing centre.
Many have expressed great concern over the future of services for pregnant women in the town after the announcement that it was to lose its old-style maternity unit in favour of midwife-led care.
There was criticism that it was another nail in the co
ffin of our hospital but medical chiefs urged patients to reserve judgement until the new facilities were up and running.
And, with a first glimpse inside the state-of-the-art centre, we cannot fail to be impressed. Birthing pools, private rooms, delivery mats, wood floors, snack room – it’s more like a hotel than a hospital.
The midwives, who will lead the care at the centre, have had a huge input into the design and facilities. These are the experts who have listened to the mums-to-be to find out what would help them through the often traumatic birthing process.
We hope that when it opens the centre and its staff can deliver the services to match the excellent facilities.
Friends may come and go, but enemies accumulate.
– Thomas Jones.

MY wife and I were involved in a collision on the A689 on Friday, June 13.
I would like to thank the three gentlemen who assisted my wife and myself. They were absolute stars (no names).
Also, the staff on the two ambulances sent to assist and last but not least the fire brigade and police for their valuable assistance.
We were transported to North Tees A&E and once again the doctors and nurses were superb with our treatment. Thanks a million you people.

First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Jonathan Band, was hugely impressed with the superb work that has been done in keeping our Trincomalee ship shape.
The Trinc has become synonymous with the town as the cornerstone of its maritime heritage.
We should be very proud of our ship and we salute the tireless efforts to keep her afloat.
