SOME YEARS ago the subject of closing Elwick junctions cropped up and after discussion at a meeting of the villagers they remained open.
The only reason there are accidents is because people have no patience to wait for the "breaks" in the traffic – which do come every now and again.

There is no reason why people who are obviously scared of using the junctions cannot go a different way round.

To close either junction would cause queuing to get onto the Hart bypass as that road is just as busy as the A19 at peak times and often has traffic queuing from the A19 up to the left turn for Hartlepool.

Some of the accidents are caused by bad driving, not taking sufficient notice of the traffic on the road and lack of patience. Most of the accidents are not "locals".

I always use Church Bank to go onto the A19 when I'm going south or straight across and up the Trimdon road, and I use the other junction when I'm going north.

Patience is the answer!

I do feel that should a discussion about closing the junctions crop up then the people who use it, i.e. local traffic from both sides of the road, should have some say in the matter.

S Dobbie,
Elwick.
