Published Date: 20 November 2008
ON November 7 the Mail printed two articles which, while quite different, have I believe something in common and of great significance to the town.
Firstly, I am in favour of selling the Victoria ground to Pools.

But I must advise supporters that a covenant exists which protects this as a football park and athletics ground.

There is no reason why such a development cannot be connected to a
n existing sports facility similar to Mill House.

The second proposal is the upgrading of the Murray Street building to a mosque and community centre.

It was refused by a small majority of councillors who are primarily concerned with parking problems.

Their concern is correct and such problems must be dealt with quickly.

But I am confident this proposal will eventually be approved.

The projects have each included a community centre and this is the common aspect which links them.

A further mosque is no problem, and I am unaware of any arising from current mosques, but if we are to become a truly integrated society there is no reason why another mosque should not be of great help through its community services.

In both cases the opportunity to develop modern, pleasing, happy centres for the benefit of both young and old is hardly to be missed.

It will be unless we have vision, determination and the desire to make our town a better place.

Stan Kaiser,
Hartlepool.
