I WAS sorry to read of businessman Harvey Alexander's recent failed attempt to launch his antiques centre plan (March 29).
It seems to have fallen at the first hurdle due to lack of support from local dealers.
But perhaps I might suggest an idea to Mr Alexander for future consideration.
Many years ago, a similar idea was launched in Cheshire in which an old far
m was converted for just such an enterprise.
However, not only were local antiques traders and dealers encouraged to the new site, the management also encouraged local craft and art groups to rent units as well.
They also took this idea one stage further by supplying a large room to local cottage industries – individuals who worked from their kitchen tables, back rooms and garages.
These people were hobbyists who produced local wares providing some interesting products.
Consequently, the centre included an eclectic mix of traditional antiques, as well as some superb locally produced crafts.
This ranged from art, jewellery, glass, wood, stone and metal, and covered everything for the home and garden.
My suggestion here is that perhaps Mr Alexander shouldn't set his sights exclusively on local antiques dealers but through the whole idea of opening it up to the local community.
Perhaps then his response rate may improve and the venture will prove a success.
