BEAUTY contests, bonny baby competitions, the popular nutty slack race and the grand parade – the Headland Carnival is back.
And the fun, games and action of this year’s carnival all gets underway this weekend with the very first Carnival Rock concert at the Borough Hall.
The talented performers from Red Dreams will be on stage at the event, which also incorporates the Miss Carnival contest.
And to the delight of the hard-working Headland Carnival committee, tickets are selling fast.
Saturday’s event kickstarts two weeks of action-packed carnival fun with all of the event favourites returning.
The grand final of the quiz league, which has been running in pubs across the Headland for the last six weeks, will be held next Wednesday, July 31 at the Headland Club, in Throston Street.
The town fair will then be opened by the newly crowned Miss Carnival at 2pm on Thursday, August 1.
The ever-popular bonny baby contest will take place on Saturday, August 3. Organisers will then be hoping for a scorcher for the family fun day on Sunday, August 4.
The following week is packed with activities and contests including sand castle design, a treasure dig, talent shows and the Carnival Princess competition.
The Headland will then be a mass of colour and excitement as this year’s event is brought to a close with the Grand Carnival Parade on Saturday, August 10.
The activities are the culmination of 12 months of hard work for the Headland Carnival committee, who are now hoping for good weather and a fantastic response from residents.
A committee spokesman said: “We’re delighted with how the programme is looking, we have done our very best to make sure all of the favourites go-ahead as usual.
“The Carnival Rock and Miss Carnival competition will get us off to a fantastic start on Saturday.”
The committee is still on the lookout for any volunteers who can help with the events over the coming weeks.
Tickets for the concert and Miss Carnival contest on Saturday, which starts at 7pm, cost £3 and can be bought from CMB Fruiterers, on the Headland.
They will also be available on the door but people are reminded that tickets have been selling fast.
