HUNDREDS of Hartlepool children benefited from free swims on the first day of a new scheme.
Youngsters under 16 can swim for free on mornings at the town’s Mill House Leisure Centre, in Raby Road, each weekday until Friday, August 30.
Hartlepool Borough Council is also providing free bus transport to and from Mill House for under 16s with pick-up points at every school.
Both the free swims and free transport are on a “first-come, first-served” basis and children can alsomake their own way.
Council leader councillor Christopher Akers-Belcher said: “We are really pleased with the way the free swims scheme has gone on day one and it’s pleasing to see so many people take advantage of the free buses.
“In total 272 children benefitted from the scheme today with 163 travelling on the free buses. Twenty-two parents also accompanied their children on the buses.
“As we stated in our publicity, children travelling on the free buses were given priority but we were also able to accommodate those that made their own way to Mill House.”
Bus timetable and more information is available at Mill House, Headland Sports Hall, Brierton Sports Centre, the Civic Centre, all libraries or by calling (01429) 223791.
