A cake maker to the stars is set to provide the perfect celebration for our Bride of the Year.

Celebration Cakes is the expert company which will be providing a sumptuous cake for Gemma Kerr, 28, and fiance Andrew Bazeley, 25, the winners of this year’s contest run by the Hartlepool Mail in conjunction with Robert Usher Photography.

And no-one could be better qualified to do the job. After all, they have already created model versions of Barcelona Cathedral, Caesar’s Palace, the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State Building.

All of the famous world landmarks were made by the staff at Celebration Cakes, in Horden. This talented team have handled unusual requests for weddings, birthdays and christenings, and have even a divorce cake.

They’ve baked for celebrities including an 87th birthday cake for veteran Hollywood actor Mickey Rooney, a wedding cake for Big Brother star Jonny Regan. Clients have also included comedienne Sarah Millican, and singer Joe McElderry.

Within seconds of looking round the stunning shop, Gemma said: “I love everything they have got in here.”

Celebration Cakes boss Irene Grove is “delighted” to be involved in this year’s competition She said it was a great feeling that her business could help to create a couple’s perfect day.

Dedication and hard work is the motto for the team which works all hours to ensure the ultimate in wedding cakes. It has to be that way because the cake has to be as fresh as possible before the bride’s big day.

Irene has been known to work until 1am to finish the job to perfection. She is into her eighth year of running the business and used to work from a workshop which she had created in a garage at her home.

She said: “We got to the point where it was taking over our house and all the consultations for the business were being done in our conservatory.”

Irene looked for business premises and set herself up at Cotsford Lane in Horden. Now, everything is made on site.

As well as Irene, the shop is also run by her daughters Angela, who works in the kitchen, and Deborah, who handles the front of the shop.

More than 60 cakes are on show. Bridegroom-to-be Andrew describes Celebration Cakes as “really impressive” and adds: “You don’t know where to look first. It is all brilliant.”

Gemma and Andrew admit they are in very good hands.
