THE brainiacs who make up the New Innfidels quiz team won this year’s Headland Carnival quiz league - and then donated their winnings back to funding the annual event.
The weekly quiz is the first event to get the carnival up and running every year with the seven pubs across the Headland taking their turn to hold a contest.
And after the accumulated scores were added up it was the New Inn’s team who were named as narrow winners this time out.
The winning team is made up of landlady and licensee of the pub, in Durham Street, Christine Watson, her husband, Peter, Terry Cornforth, Carol Smith, Stan Galloway, Kathy Tomlinson and Keith Grey, who also won the carnival’s pool competition this year.
Peter Watson, 57, a dad-of-three, said: “We were really pleased to win it this year.
“It’s always a good laugh to do the quiz with the other pubs and clubs on the Headland and we last won it in 2008 so it was about time we got the trophy back.”
As well as winning the trophy the team were handed a cash prize, but donated it straight back to the carnival’s committee.
Hundreds of people are expected on the Headland today for the hugely-popular parade.
See the Mail’s website, www.hartlepoolmail.co.uk for news and video footage after the parade this afternoon and full coverage will also feature in Monday’s Mail.
