Demolition work is underway on the Pilot Pier which dates from around 1830 to remove the buildings that have been on the Headland landmark for many years. The largest building has been used by many Hartlepool families such as the Pounder’s for both building cobles and making lobster pots and no doubt some of us, in our youth, have used the roof as a diving board when the tide was in.
A smaller building was used by the pilots as they waited for shipping to arrive at the port. What are your memories over the years of the pier and the surrounding areas such as the fish sands or block sands?
If you can add any more details to the history of the site. Please write to Tom Collins at the Hartlepool Mail.
