A FAMILY history enthusiast is hoping Hartlepool Mail readers can shed some light on his North-East roots.
Simon Myers wants to hear from any Hartlepool or east Durham people who could be related to him to get in touch.
The 63-year-old retired pharmaceutical company worker’s great-grandfather, George Henry Myers, was born in Hartlepool in 1857.
He married Charlotte Pigg at the town’s Christchurch in 1879 and he lived in John Street in the Stranton area.
But Charlotte died while giving birth to the couple’s son, William Walton Myers, Simon’s grandfather, in 1881.
William’s son, also called George, who was born in 1910 in Gateshead, worked for ICI and married Thirza Bunnett in Harrogate in 1945, was Simon’s father.
Simon’s great-grandfather George Henry, who was a merchant seaman and pawnbroker, remarried to Isabella Brown in 1885 and moved to Gateshead.
They had five children: Mary, born 1889, Isabel, born 1891, Sarah, born 1895, Henry, born 1900 and George, born 1901.
George Henry died in Newcastle in 1927 aged 69.
Simon, who lives in the village of Offerton, near Stockport, in Cheshire, with wife Jean and is dad to Lynnette, 23, has started to write a book about his family tree.
He said: “I have been researching my family tree, but have hit a brick wall.
“I want to go as far back as I can on my father’s side.
“On the Census it lists George Henry as being born in West Hartlepool. I contacted the Durham Records Office and Hartlepool Central Library and they can’t find any record of George Henry Myers’ birth. It’s a bit of a mystery.
“I have managed to go as far back as 1575 on my mother’s side, but drew a blank with my father’s.
“I realise we are going back a long way, but I would love to hear from anyone who knows the origins of my family.”
