READER Derek Bonner has sent us this week’s collection of Memory Lane photographs that take us back to day trips with Oxford Street School, juvenile jazz band parades with the Heortness Highlanders, decorated horses and carts and a visit to the stables on the West Quay.

A fireman for thirty years, Derek lived in Cumberland Street as a boy and went to Oxford Street school then Elwick Road school before joining Burton Hankey the plumbing and electrical company. As a youngster Derek was a member of the Heortness Highlanders Juvenile Jazz band who practised at the Headland bandstand area or in the nearby Victoria Buildings. Derek also travelled throughout the area with the band until they disbanded in the early 1960s. If any of the pictures bring back memories for you or if you have photographs you would like to share with the Memory Lane readers please contact Tom Collins at the Hartlepool Mail.

See Saturday’s Mail for our spread of pictures and there will also be a slideshow appearing on this site soon.
