MEMORY LANE: Teeing off for a shot into the past

The focus is on sport and politics in today’s collection from the Mail’s photographic archive.

A victory celebration in 1964 by the new MP for Hartlepool, Ted Leadbitter, is among the pictures featured.

And a general election party, held in West Hartlepool in 1950, is also shown – although no names are known.

“My favourite has to be the golfing one, which shows Steetley cement works in the background,” said archivist Susan Swinney.

“But the one of Cerebos FC in 1969-70 is also interesting, as the team was hugely successful that season.

“Indeed, out of 46 matches, they won 42 and lost only two. They also won the Hartlepool Church League, League Challenge Cup and the Memorial Shield.”
