On a Monday night in May 1968 Hartlepools United celebrated the first promotion in the club’s history - and the Mail was there to capture it on camera.
“I came across these pictures while sorting through old images and thought they might bring back happy memories,” said photographic archivist Susan Swinney.
Sixty years and one day had passed since the formation of the club before promotion beckoned - thanks to a 2-0 win against Swansea Town at Vetch Field.
The victory ensured Third Division football the following season and, following the match, Swansea player Ivor Allchurch offered his congratulations.
“It is the waiting that makes the winning worthwhile,” he told the players and manager Gus McLean. * Look out for more promotion photos in the Mail next Friday.
