HUNDREDS of men are set to take part in a major charity fundraiser this weekend and organisers have issued a final rallying call for more to sign up.
Miles for Men, which raises money for Cancer Research UK, returns to Hartlepool this Sunday and there is still time for men of all ages to put their names down.
Fundraisers can sign up on the day, but organisers have appealed for people wanting to take part to register in advance so they know exactly how many will be completing the course.
So far 600 people have registered and organisers hope to reach 1,000 on the day.
Father-of-three Michael Day launched Miles for Men in memory of his dad, Michael senior, who died of throat cancer in 2007, aged 67.
Michael, 39, said: “This year’s Miles for Men event is almost upon us and we are expecting it to be another fantastic day.
“Hundreds have already signed up, but there is still time for people to put their names down, support a good cause and help us raise vital money for Cancer Research UK.
“People can register on the day as well and we had about 200 people sign up on the day last year.”
The 5k Miles for Men event will be held this Sunday and follows last year’s successful event in Hartlepool, which saw 1,000 men of all ages run, walk, or jog a three-mile route.
The event was a huge success and raised £40,000 for Cancer Research UK. This year it will be rolled out to Newcastle and Liverpool as well.
Colourful comic Roy “Chubby” Brown will be launching this year’s event.
The 68-year-old, regarded as Britain’s bluest comic, was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2002 and received intensive chemotherapy treatment for two years.
Speaking to the Mail, Roy said: “Miles for Men is a cause close to my heart and when they asked I had no hesitation in saying yes.”
The Miles for Men course starts at Maritime Avenue and finishes at Seaton Carew Cricket Club where there will be a fun day and live music, featuring bands including The Style Selektors.
