MAKE a date in your diary for Sunday, July 24.

It marks exactly one year to go until the Olympics come to London, bringing with it the biggest names in athletics.

But why wait until then to get into the sporting mood?

Hartlepool has its own event which will encourage people to celebrate the town’s superb sporting history, its potential Olympic champions, and to get into shape themselves.

It is called Celebration Village – Let The Games Begin, and runs from 11am to 5pm at Summerhill, on July 24.

The venue will be turned into a packed arena filled with sports and recreation ranging from a fun run to football, and French bowls to golf.

Maxine Crutwell, the recreation development officer with Hartlepool Borough Council, which is one of the organisations behind the event, said: “This is as much about getting people to get involved in physical activity and about promoting Summerhill.

“We are a keen sporting town and we have keen sports enthusiasts.

“We also want to promote the sporting clubs of Hartlepool as we have some excellent ones. We also have excellent competitors such as boxers Amanda Coulson and Savannah Marshall and swimmer Gemma Lowe, who are all aiming to compete at the Olympics.

“And we have past Olympians that we should celebrate.”

This week, the Mail looks at one of the events which will encourage whole families to get involved.

The Celebration Village – Let The Games Begin event will start with a fun run in which people can choose to run any one of three distances, all around the Summerhill site.

It has been organised in conjunction with the Burn Road Harriers athletics club in Hartlepool.

l The Wenlock Run starts at 9am and covers six kilometres. It is designed for people who run regularly.

l The four kilometre Mandeville Run at 9.45am is for people who do some running and would like a challenge.

l The two kilometre 2012 Run at 10.15am is for all the family including children. People can jog or walk round the course on this run.

All are free and anyone wanting more details can contact (01429) 284050.

Those wanting application forms can contact (01429) 523404 or email sport.recreation@hartlepool.gov.uk. People can also register on the day from 8.45am.

Parking on the day is expected to be restricted to car parks at West Hartlepool Rugby Football Club and Catcote School.

l Next week: Boccia, boxerfit, zumba and more at Summerhill.
