A STUDENT is set to swap his text books for a pair of boxing gloves when he competes alongside some of the best boxers in the North-East.
Paul Archer, 20, who turned professional last year and boxes in the light welter-weight division, will have his third professional fight at the Summer Rumble event being held at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light on Sunday, July 3.
The Easington ace, who is studying a sports foundation degree at East Durham College, said: “I’m excited to fight at the Stadium of Light, it’s going to be a pleasant change from boxing at the Rainton Meadows Arena.
“I still don’t know who I’m fighting yet so it’s been a bit difficult to prepare but I’m training well and I’m as fit as I have ever been.”
The Summer Rumble is being promoted by Phil Jeffries, the dad of Olympic bronze medallist and former East Durham College student Tony Jeffries.
Phil said: “I’ve had every pro boxer in the North-East trying to get on this bill. “It’s an exciting venue and a place that we hope will see some big fights in the future.”
A Northern Area cruiserweight clash between Sunderland’s David Dolan and Birtley’s Jon-Lewis Dickinson will top the bill.
Phil added: “This is the biggest North- East fight in a quarter of a century. This fight would be a worthy British title fight.”
Another big clash will be the 10-rounder at bantamweight between West Rainton’s Martin Ward and former British and European champion Ian Napa.
The show will take place on an outdoor stage in front of the Stadium of Light’s West Stand. For tickets call Paul on 07896 974716.
