HARTLEPOOL Mail readers were today urged to help make sure the show goes on.
An urgent plea for a leading man has been sounded by officials at Hartlepool Stage Society.
The dance and drama school will hold its production of The Sound of Music from Tuesday, May 1, to Sunday, May 6, and 12 children – six boys and eight girls aged between five and 17 - have already been cast for their parts.
The epic musical centres on a woman who leaves an Austrian convent to become a governess to the children of a Naval officer widower, only for romance to blossom.
The search for the cast began last year.
But society chairman Jill Jackson said: “We need a budding amateur dramatic man to play Captain von Trapp for our forthcoming production.”
The man originally lined up for the part has withdrawn, said Jill. She added: “We are now left without a man to play this part and if we cannot cast this vital role the production will have to be cancelled.
“We have cast 12 children for the show thanks to our recent advert in the Hartlepool Mail but we are now desperate for a Captain, aged between 30-60 roughly 5ft 10ins upwards who has the passion to act and sing and be a part of this epic musical.”
The show starts at 7pm each night with a 2pm Saturday matinee, all held at the Town Hall Theatre in Raby Road, Hartlepool. Tickets are £10.
Jill added: “We rehearse at Osbourne Road Stage Society Hall from 7.30pm every Tuesday evening and have cast all other parts.
“The children are devastated at the thought that we might have to cancel. The show has not been performed in Hartlepool for over 20 years and is a fantastic show with a professional set and costumes ordered.
“We are hoping that somebody out there is a keen singer who we can assist with acting or they may even have tread the boards before. Any man aged between 30 and 60 would be great”.
