BELLS rang out across Hartlepool to celebrate England’s patron saint on St George’s Day.

Hartlepool Bell Ringers played for almost an hour when they pulled the ropes at Hartlepool Art Gallery, in Church Square, yesterday morning.

The bells rang out to mark St George's Day in Hartlepool when the Hartlepool Ringers played for 30 minutes from 11am. Pictured, clockwise from bottom left, are: Andrew Frost, Gerald Martin, Beatrice Coulson and Bernard Gilby.

It was part of the national Ring for England event which saw bell ringers up and down the country play for our patron saint.

Hartlepool Bell Ringers were in action again last night at All Saints Church in Stranton, their usual home.

Secretary Andrew Frost said: “It was all to celebrate St George’s Day by English bell ringers.

“We felt really pleased with the turnout we had at the art gallery as a lot of our members work during the day.”

The club has played to mark a host of important days in the nation’s calender in recent years including for last year’s Olympics and Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

They also added to the sombre atmosphere of Hartlepool’s Remembrance Sunday service last November.

Andrew added: “We have gradually been building our numbers back up over the last three years by raising awareness and now have 25 bell ringers which is tremendous.”
