LOCAL HERO Adam Johnson staked his claim for a place in Middlesbrough's Premier League starting XI with a virtuoso performance.
Johnson scored twice as a youthful Middlesbrough side put five past Coca-Cola League Two promotion hopefuls Darlington at the Arena last night.

The England Under 21 player ran the show and would have deserved a hat-trick given his stunning display
.

The winger from Easington put Boro ahead on the half hour with a cheeky chipped penalty after he had been brought down in the Quakers box.

Boro summer signing Marvin Emnes made it 2-0 three minutes before the break with a crisp turn and shot.

A Lewis Hardman own goal put the visitors three up while Tony McMahon, back to fitness after a succession of injury traumas, capitalised on a ricochet in the Darlington box to make it four with 69 minutes gone.

Johnson rounded off the 5-0 victory with a driving run and brilliant shot after being put through by Josh Walker, who impressed with a great display in midfield.

Former Pools boss Martin Scott, now Middlesbrough's Under 18 coach, was in charge of the Boro side last night.
Darlington included beanpole Canadian striker Marcus Haber on trial.

The teenager seems to be on some sort of trial tour of England, having already been to Luton and Leeds before playing for Pools at York last Wednesday.
