FABRICE Pancrate might be playing catch up with his fitness – but Chris Hughton is confident he will soon be firing on all cylinders.
Free agent Pancrate joined Newcastle United over the weekend after a successful trial at St James's Park.

And the 29-year-old – who travelled with Hughton's squad for tonight's game at Preston North End – could even make his debut at Deepdale should his clearance come through in time.

Pancrate had a pre-season with previous club Paris-Saint Germain and Hughton is confident his fitness isn't too far behind that of his new colleagues, having turned out for the club's reserves against Hartlepool United last week.

"There's a bit of catch up, but he's had a pre-season," Hughton said.

"He left PSG on good terms and has trained some of the time, but, of course, he's off the pace in terms of matches.

"He managed to play nigh on 90 minutes in the reserves game and didn't look out of place. He's not played competitive games, but he's played training games."

Pancrate – who has signed until the end of the season, with an option for another year – could make a cameo appearance against Preston.

"It depends on the clearance," said Hughton. "If we get clearance in time, there's a possibility he'll be in the squad. If not, then he'll see the game. He's travelled and it's good for him to be around the squad."
