School will soon be out for summer – and families will be wanting something to keep them entertained.

To help you out, here are our 10 things to do for free in the North East.

1) Roker Beach, Sunderland

Take the family along to Roker Beach to enjoy some fish and chips or why not be adventurous, bring your surf board and ride the waves.

2) Seaburn Beach, Sunderland

If surfing isn’t for you, why not take a stroll along the Sunderland coast line and enjoy the sunny weather with a lovely ice cream.

3) Winter Gardens, Burdon Road, Sunderland

Learn something new about the city of Sunderland, from past to present day you can discover the wonderful history of the city.

With hands-on exhibits and media interactive stations, the museum is full of exciting displays.

4) Penshaw Monument, Sunderland

Come and explore one of Sunderland’s most beautiful landmarks. Walk to the top of Penshaw hill and enjoy the picturesque view of the North East with your picnic.

5) Marine Park, Sea Road, South Shields

There is plenty fun to be had in the park, whether you ride the marine railway on the miniature steam railway or follow the new art trail that includes 10 sculptures hidden in the environment.

6) Bents Park, South Shields

Home to many events in South Tyneside such as Proms in the Park and the Summer Festival.

When there is not a concert on, feel free to relax in the park and enjoy the sun.

7) South Shields Museum & Art Gallery, Ocean Road

With three main displays such as Tales of South Tyneside, Art Adventure and Changing Faces which looks at South Tyneside during the Bronze Age to modern day.

8) Hartlepool Art Gallery, Church Square, Hartlepool

Visit the contemporary and fine art, photography and crafts.

Take the time to climb the 100 ft clock viewing tower for great views of Hartlepool and ejnjoy a light snack and a brew the café.

9) Hartlepool Marina

The marina has one of the most modern Marina facilities in Europe.

The £60 million Marina is Hartlepool’s most relaxing location, with waterside restaurants and romantic promenade

10) The Museum of Hartlepool, Jackson’s Dock

The Museum of Hartlepool is among Britain’s top ten free visitor attractions.

With hundreds of exhibits that include the restored paddle steam ship Wingfield Castle and the finest ‘gas illuminated lighthouse’.

It gives you some local history of the martime industry in Hartlepool.
