POLICE are hunting two thieves who stole a social club's 12ft outdoor umbrella.
The £500 canopy had been used to shelter smokers from the rain after the smoking ban was enforced at Seaton Carew Social Club last year.

But smokers will now be praying for good weather after two men were seen running along Station Lane at midnigh
t on Saturday with the 8ft pole underarm.

Staff at the club have been left dumbfounded by the theft of the colourful brolly which measures 12ft when opened out.

John Cowley, vice-president of the club, said: "I found out on Sunday morning when I came in and was shocked.

"I was told the last time it was seen was when two lads were spotted with it going down the road.

"I'm amazed they managed to lift it. They aren't light things and are very bulky.

"I have no idea what someone would do with it – maybe they were planning a barbecue."

The club will now let the police investigation run before deciding on whether to purchase a new one.

"We might have to chain or glue it to the wall next time," added Mr Cowley.

Police are appealing for any sightings of the red and white umbrella that has 'Stella Artois' written on the canvas.

If you have any information on the brolly's disappearance contact PC Mick Johnson at Jutland Road Police Station on (01429) 861678.
