A MAJOR clampdown is being launched to combat doorstep criminals.
Hartlepool Borough Council is planning to launch a new No Cold Caller Zone in Elwick village, on the outskirts of Hartlepool, following an increase in bogus callers and because it is close to the A19.
It follows the successful launch of a simila
r scheme in Throston Close, Hartlepool, and council chiefs are hoping residents will back the proposal which is aimed at protecting vulnerable people in the town.
People living in Hillcrest Grove, Green Lea, The Walk, The Paddock, Martindale Close and Manor Close are now being asked to attend drop-in consultation events at the village hall from 3pm-4pm and 7pm-8pm on Thursday.
Sue Willoughby, from the Safer Hartlepool Partnership, said: "Bogus callers can greatly affect the lives of their victims so it's important that people attend the consultation events and support the launch of the No Cold Caller Zone."
Brian Dinning, from Hartlepool Borough Council's trading standards department, added: "Trading Standards always look positively on initiatives that aim to combat any form of criminal activity, particularly those activities that affect the most vulnerable in society.
"Given that the pilot zone was a success, the setting up of other zones will, hopefully, send a strong message to offenders that they will not be tolerated in Hartlepool."
Council chiefs say people who want to protect themselves against doorstep crime should:
LOCK: Keep your front and back doors locked, even when at home.
STOP: Ask yourself if you are expecting anyone. Check that the back door is locked and take the key out. Look through a spy-hole or window to see who is there.
CHAIN: If you decide to open the door put the chain or bar on first. Keep the bar or chain on while talking to the person at the door.
CHECK: Ask for and take time to check the identity card of a caller. Call the company they claim to represent by using the telephone directory. Don't call the number of the ID card as it may be fake.
