YOUNGSTERS showed spades of enthusiasm when they took part in a sandcastle competition.

The event was held on the Fish Sands as part of the 84th Hartlepool People's Headland Carnival celebrations.

Around 50 children aged five-to-15 enjoyed creating different designs which included mermaids, birds, and castles.

First prize of £15 in the five-to-nine age group went to an octopus design, while a Buckingham Palace-inspired creation won £10 for second place and a castle won some lucky youngsters £5 for their efforts.

In the 10-15 section, the creators of a seagull sculpture won £15 in first place, an anchor took £10 and a small mermaid earned its designer £5.

Margaret Kennedy, vice chair of the carnival committee, said: "There were some lovely designs, including a big anchor, a bird on a rock, Buckingham Palace and three or four mermaids. The sun was glorious and the tide stayed out for us."
