Hartlepool Primary Care Trust is working with Cleveland Fire Brigade to challenge smokers to stamp out their cigarettes for good on Wednesday, March 12.

Smoking Cessation Services across the region are preparing to help people who want to use No Smoking Day as a kickstart to quit.

This year's theme, The Great No Smoking Day Challenge, acknowledges that quitting is a real challenge and individuals will not be alone in their quit attempt.

Bosses say the theme also lends itself to big events and the opportunity to raise money for your local charity.

Carole Johnson, health development team leader at Hartlepool PCT, said: "In Hartlepool 31 per cent of adults smoke and research has shown that over two thirds of them would like to stop.

"No Smoking Day provides an excellent opportunity for them to do that.

"By using the support available on No Smoking Day and throughout the year you can significantly increase your chance of success."
