LIBERAL Democrat leader Councillor Arthur Preece said his party doesn't want to see any closures in town but the problem of surplus places needs addressing.

Coun Preece also stated that the closure of schools in rural communities would be a major blow.

The councillor added: "We haven't considered the issues surrounding the PCP in depth because the consultation process is ongoing.

"I can appreciat
e the difficulty but I certainly wouldn't want to see the closure of schools like Rossmere.

"We cannot maintain too many excess places in schools because if you do that then we won't get the funding for the development at all.

"With Elwick and Hart, if you remove the schools then it will have a massive effect on the village community.

"I would agree that the NHS should remain free at the point of use and we don't want to move away from that principal."

Meanwhile, Conservative Councillor David Young claims the Labour Group have released the documents with a general election in mind.

The councillor, who represents the Seaton Ward, said: "The document is trying to placate the supporters because the Labour party are running scared.

"It is only saying that about Hart and Elwick schools because that is not a Labour stronghold."
