DRUNKEN yobs and thugs who carry knives are being taken off the streets and locked up as the police and the courts use new powers.
Magistrates used their tougher sentencing rules to jail Lee Fannan, 20, after he was snared wielding two kitchen knives in the street.

Police also used powers under the Violent Crime Reduction Act to banish 21 potential troublemakers out of Hartlepool town centre as the war on drink-fuelled trouble continues.

Chief Inspector Mick Williams, of Hartlepool police, said: "I am very pleased with the impact the new legislation is having on keeping the town safe."
