POLICE are trying to track down the owner of a mini-digger that was torched in a field.

Officers are looking to trace the owner of the machine, which was abandoned in a field off Market Crescent, Wingate.

Nearby workmen alerted the emergency services at around 12.30pm yesterday when they noticed it was alight.

Fire crews from Peterlee Fire Station attended the incident and firefighter Michael Corfield said the machine was well alight when they got there.

Peterlee Police were also present.

Inspector Darren Walton said: "We believe it was stolen and that it's been driven to that area.

"It is suspected to be a deliberate fire."

Firefighter Corfield added: "It was well alight and going strong. It was totally destroyed."

Two engines attended the scene and stayed for an hour and a half, using a hose reel to extinguish the blaze.

The owner of the mini-digger, or witnesses with information about the blaze can call Peterlee Police on 0345 6060365.
