FIRE crews were called to rubbish fires started deliberately.
Crews from Stranton and Headland Fire Stations were called out after rubbish was piled up and set alight in two separate suspected arson attacks.

The first call came at 6pm on Wednesday to Corporation Road, on the Headland, where furniture had been set alight in one of a row of brick garages belonging to Housing Hartlepool.

Crew manager Michael Ingram said: "It looked like the door has been broken down and somebody had set rubbish inside alight." It is believed to be deliberate and an investigation will be carried out.

The second rubbish fire happened at around 1am yesterday when Stranton crews were called to Coral bookmakers in Winterbottom Avenue, Hartlepool.

Watch manager Terry Connor said a black bin bag had been set alight and pushed against an electrical inlet cable. He added: "I think it was deliberate. Fires like this pull us away from more pressing needs."
