YOUNG footballers netted a top accolade when they took part in a regional games festival.

A team of youngsters from the Manor West Youth Project in Hartlepool have emerged regional under-14 football champions after taking part in the North-East Regional StreetGames Festival.

The squad had earlier taken part in the Tees Valley StreetG
ames and did so well they were asked to represent Teesside at the regional leg of the games in Cramlington, Northumberland.

The games included football, handball, tennis, dancing and cheerleading.
John Reid, chairman of the youth project, said although the Manor West team were runners-up in the Norton festival, they performed brilliantly, winning one game 9-0 and impressing organisers.

Mr Reid said: "For a bunch of kids that have never ever been in a street games festival before, they have done exceptionally well.

"They played so well in the Tees Valley StreetGames contest that organisers invited them to represent Tees Valley in Cramlington.

"They have gone there and hammered the opposition and come out as champions. Everyone at Manor West is so proud.

"These are the kids that come from the most deprived areas of Hartlepool and they have shown what they can achieve. They really worked hard."
